Choices
By Ruth Rin
With every turn in life, choices abound
In fact, so numerous, that they confound.
The choice we make has vast implications,
The “road not taken” defies imagination.
Thousands of examples can be given
Of options we’ve confronted as they’ve arisen.
Advances in medicine offer us hope,
Yet force distress on us with which to cope.
Sophisticated scans of my eyes reveal
Corneal dystrophy -- what an ordeal!
Specialists I've consulted do agree
Surgery, in time, is in store for me.
Surgery could lead to a transplant or stroke,
Yet a long delay may its own problems provoke.
A transplant would entail months of medication,
With possibility of infection or rejection!
What a terrifying decision to have to make,
Risk of losing vision or loss of life itself!
Cancer patients, too, have hard choices to make,
To endure chemotherapy, despite risks at stake.
I pray to the universe to send me a sign,
To ease a decision with which I can align.
